Tornerías Mosque

Fusion of Cultures

The foundation of the mosque building has been dated thanks to a recent archaeological excavation between the ninth and tenth centuries. It is located in what in medieval times was called the suburb of the Franks, next to the souk of the burnishers and above the souk of the money changers; in the heart of an eminently commercial district.

The Tornerías Mosque kept its cult even after the city was taken by Alfonso VI; it was deconsecrated by the Catholic Monarchs between 1498 and 1505. It currently houses the Center for the Promotion of Crafts of Castilla La Mancha.

The plan of the mosque is square. The space is organized by means of four columns, in three naves, which generate nine square compartments. All of them are covered by vaults with the exception of the central lantern, with a cruciform structure. The arches are horseshoe arches, in brick, with a great variety of proportions. The mihrab is located on the south side, corresponding to the quibla wall.

What determines the uniqueness of this building is the unusual fact that it has two floors, due to the unevenness of the terrain. The entrance from the Solarejo square is at the level of the prayer room, while the first floor is accessed from Tornerías street. The latter preserves four stone horseshoe arches as foundations. The recent archaeological study has revealed that these arches are part of a basilica building, divided into three naves and an apse, dating from the Visigothic period.
